The FDA approved ketamine for use in 1970. During the Vietnam War, it was used for immediate treatment of pain associated with battlefield injuries. Ketamine began to be used as part of surgical anesthesia because of its safety profile and effectiveness at calming patients and relieving severe pain. This opened the door to studies evaluating other uses for ketamine.

Physicians began to use ketamine to rapidly alleviate symptoms of depression and other mood disorders. Numerous studies have now shown that ketamine is both a safe and effective treatment for depression, PTSD, anxiety, chronic pain, bipolar, OCD, psychological trauma, migraines, and suicidal thoughts. The use of ketamine for these conditions represents one of the most significant breakthroughs in the treatment of mental health in decades.

HOW KETAMINE WORKS

Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic with analgesic and pain-relieving properties. Ketamine’s effects are dose-dependent. At the low doses used in our clinic, ketamine is effective at treating mood and chronic pain symptoms with minimal or no untoward side effects. Patients may experience a mild dissociative state wherein positive stimuli and emotions are enhanced. During this time, perceptions of visual and auditory stimuli may be altered and patients may experience feelings of detachment from the environment or from self.

Ketamine is believed to promote a process called neuroplasticity which occurs during treatment and subsequent days. Ketamine-induced neuroplasticity is thought to reprogram neuronal circuits (the wiring in one’s brain) by selectively blocking the glutamate receptor and its effects. This process can be thought of as cooling down areas of the brain that cause unwanted mood and pain symptoms and allowing more healthy neuronal connections to form that promote long-term suppression of mood and pain symptoms.

Ketamine has been shown to relieve symptoms of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and chronic pain. It can also be very effective at reducing active suicidal thoughts and anxiety or panic attacks. It is particularly effective for patients who have not found relief from other treatments including therapy, medications, TMS, and ECT.
